Greece is a popular Mediterranean destination renowned for its breathtakingly beautiful islands and ancient ruins, such as the Acropolis of Athens. With its captivating history, stunning scenery, delicious Greek food, and warm hospitality, it's no wonder why tourists flock to Greece year after year. From the iconic whitewashed houses of Santorini to the lush greenery of Corfu, there is something special about each and every corner of Greece. So here are the best places to visit in Greece.

1. Athens

For those looking to take a vacation in Greece, there are many amazing places to explore. One of the top destinations for travelers and one of my favourite places is Athens, the largest city and capital of Greece. From ancient sites to modern attractions, there are a lot of things to do in Athens.

The Acropolis is one of the most iconic landmarks in all of Greece and it’s an absolute must-see while visiting Athens. Constructed between 447 BC and 438 BC on a hill overlooking the city, it contains several ancient monuments such as the Parthenon and Erechtheion.

The Parthenon stands proudly atop the Acropolis hill overlooking the city of Athens and serves as an enduring reminder of Athenian power during Ancient Greek times. The Parthenon was originally dedicated to Athena, goddess of wisdom and protector of the city, making it a major symbol in Greek mythology.

It has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 due to its impressive architecture, intricate sculptures, and significant role in ancient history. Visitors can view stunning panoramic views from atop the hill or explore its historical importance through guided tours led by experienced guides with knowledge about its construction and symbolism.

5. Cape Sounion

Cape Sounion is a rocky promontory located on the southeastern tip of the Attica peninsula in Greece you want to visit. Home to a beautiful white marble temple dedicated to Poseidon, god of the sea, Cape Sounion offers breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and an opportunity to explore ancient Greek history.

This magical spot has been home to many civilizations over time. 6. Meteora

With many destinations in Greece, Meteora is certainly one of the most awe-inspiring sites in Greece, and easily one of the best places in Greece for good reason. It’s located in central mainland Greece and is home to a stunning landscape of towering sandstone peaks that rise from the ground like something out of a fairytale.

Not only does Meteora boast some of the most breathtaking scenery in all of Greece, but it also houses six monasteries built on top these sandy peaks. These monasteries date back to the 14th century, and many are still functioning today with monks living within them. Travellers can explore these ancient sites while taking in spectacular views from different angles as they ascend or descend the rocky rocks surrounding them.

8. Crete

Located in the city of Heraklion, and the capital of Crete, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum houses a vast collection of artifacts from prehistoric times to Roman antiquity.The Heraklion Archaeological Museum was established in 1881, when the collection of Ludwig Ross (1827-1894), was donated to the Greek state.

It is one of the largest archaeological museums in Europe, with more than 20,000 objects on display. The collections are divided into two main sections: Minoan and Classical Antiquity.

In the Minoan section, visitors can explore ancient pottery and frescoes from Minoan palaces such as Knossos and Phaistos. And in the Classical section you can find artifacts from the prehistoric period up to Roman times, including jewelry, glass vessels, gold coins and statues. The windmills date back to 16th century, when Mykonos was an important trading center in the region. The locals used these structures to power mills and draw water from underground wells. Although no longer in use today, there is still plenty of history behind each one that can be appreciated by visitors that visit the windmills.

Picturesque white houses are built into steep hillsides, cascading down towards a sparkling blue sea.

The little lanes and pathways that wind through Oia have been featured in many travel guides and magazines due to their sheer charm and character; they provide an intimate atmosphere perfect for exploring on foot.

The Museum of Prehistoric Thera is one of the most fascinating and historically significant places to visit in Santorini, this museum houses artifacts from ancient times that date back to the Bronze Age. It's known for its collections of pottery, sculptures, frescoes and other artifacts discovered at Akrotiri, an ancient city that was buried by a volcanic eruption in 1600BC.

Visitors can explore this remarkable collection and learn about Minoan civilization through interactive exhibits such as life-sized replicas of homes and villas from Akrotiri. 12. Rhodes

Rhodes is known as one of the best Greek islands to visit in Greece and it's easy to see why! With its magnificent beaches, vibrant nightlife and historical sites- there’s something here for everyone. From the stunning old town district of Rhodes, with its cobbled streets and architecture dating back to medieval times- to exploring some of the many secluded bays along with sandy beaches- you won't be disappointed by what this island has to offer.

One of the major landmarks to visit in Rhodes is the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes. This palace was once home to one of the most powerful military forces in Europe - The Order of St John. Built by knights in 1309, it has been restored several times throughout its long history and still stands as a reminder of past glory and power.

The Palace features various sections such as The Great Courtyard, Gothic Hall, Knights' Hall and Throne Room which are all worth a visit for their unique architecture styles that combine Byzantine and Gothic elements. Additionally, visitors can also explore different galleries that house artifacts from previous eras such as coins, weapons and armors used by knights during battles.

The Lindos Acropolis is one of Rhodes most interesting places to see with as much history as Athens. The acropolis stands atop a steep hill overlooking the sea. Built during medieval times by Knights of St John, it's an ancient citadel that's now home to some of Greece's most important archaeological sites.
