1. Phuket Big Buddha

Phuket Big Buddha

When one hears the words “Big Buddha”, images of a large statue may come to mind. In Phuket, Southern Thailand, those images are brought to life in the form of an iconic 45-meter-tall white marble figure that overlooks the entire island. Situated on top of Nakkerd Hill between the Chalong and Karon beaches stands this impressive landmark – known as the Big Buddha of Phuket.

The statue was built in 2004 with funds collected from local residents who wanted a special monument that represented the spiritual side of their culture. It is believed to bring good luck and prosperity to those who visit the Big Buddha. The base of the statue is made up of four separate pedestals representing Buddhism's four main principles: faith, wisdom, morality, and charity.

FAQ

Q: Is it worth it to go to Phuket?

A: Firstly, the island boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Southeast Asia. Patong Beach, with its clear turquoise waters and powdery white sand, attracts sunbathers and water sports enthusiasts alike. Kata Beach offers a more laid-back atmosphere, perfect for those seeking relaxation away from the crowds.

Additionally, Phuket's nightlife scene is renowned worldwide. Patong's Bangla Road comes alive after sunset with its bustling bars and clubs that cater to all tastes. From lively nightclubs where revelers dance until dawn to small beachside bars offering chilled drinks and live music performances under the stars - there is something for every visitor. For those who prefer a more tranquil evening experience can opt for beachfront dining at one of the many seafood restaurants along Karon or Kamala Beach.

Q: Is Phuket expensive to visit?

A: In terms of accommodation, Phuket offers a wide range of options catering to different budgets. From luxury resorts with private pools overlooking the sea to more affordable guesthouses and hostels. Similarly, dining in Phuket can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. Street food stalls offer delicious local dishes at incredibly low prices, while high-end restaurants provide gourmet experiences at a higher cost.

The cost of activities and attractions in Phuket also varies greatly. Exploring the beautiful beaches is free, but if you're interested in water sports like snorkeling or diving, there will be additional expenses involved. Similarly, visiting cultural sites such as the Big Buddha or Old Phuket Town may require entrance fees or donations.

Q: Is it safe to stay in Phuket?

A: While it is important to be cautious when traveling anywhere, Phuket remains a relatively safe place for visitors who take necessary precautions. Like any tourist hotspot, there are certain areas of Phuket that are more prone to crime than others. Tourists should avoid secluded beaches or dimly lit streets at night and stay vigilant of their belongings in crowded areas. Common scams include overcharging for services or products, fake tour operators, and pickpocketing. However, by staying alert and doing some research beforehand, travelers can easily avoid falling victim to these scams.

Q: Can you swim in the water in Phuket?

A: Phuket's beaches provide ample opportunities for swimming and water activities. The majority of Phuket's coastline boasts calm waters that are perfect for swimming. It is important to note that weather conditions can influence the safety of swimming in Phuket's waters. During rainy seasons or periods with rough seas, caution should be exercised as some areas may have stronger currents or underwater hazards.

Q: Do you need a car in Phuket?

A: Phuket has a well-developed public transportation system, with readily available taxis, tuk-tuks, and motorbike taxis that can take you virtually anywhere on the island so a car rental is not really necessary. Additionally, there are plenty of local buses that connect different areas of Phuket at affordable prices.

If you're mainly planning on staying within one area or exploring nearby attractions like beaches or markets within walking distance from your accommodation, then relying on public transport will likely suffice. However, if you have plans to explore more remote parts of the island or visit off-the-beaten-path attractions that aren't easily accessible by public transportations such as waterfalls or viewpoints outside major towns, renting a car might provide more convenience and flexibility.
