Set the scene

Once you step inside the magnificent Hotel Maria Cristina, the word that immediately springs to mind is 'grandeur'. From the regal, sweeping staircase leading to upper floors, to the glittering chandeliers that hang from soaring ceilings, everything about this hotel speaks sophistication and class. Gilded moldings, carved columns, and plush furnishings abound, reflecting the elegance of the Belle Époque era beautifully. The grandiosity is balanced perfectly with a light, soft color palette and modern touches, adding a warmth that invites you in.

Now, as you meander through the hotel, each room tells a story, each corridor extends an invitation to step back in time. The lobby alone is a breathtaking mix of old-world charm and new-world comfort, lined with high columns, artisan mirrors, and close attention to detail, it emanates an air of quiet luxury. The array of historical photographs adorning the walls pays homage to the hotel's regal past while presenting prime conversation starters. Even in bustling hours, the sound echoing softly off marble floors seems almost whisper-soft, adding to the tranquil, calming atmosphere.

What can we expect in our room

Every room is a tastefully designed haven — blending Belle Époque grandeur with an understated contemporary appeal. From the plush, silken settees to the bespoke art pieces adorning the walls, not a corner of your room skimps on luxury. And yes, whether you're in a standard room or a suite, you'll have an excellent view of the charming Urumea River, the San Sebastian city scape, or, if you’re lucky, both.

Now let's close our eyes and speak of the bathrooms —detailed with Italian marble, these spacious sanctuaries might just convince you to spend a little longer beneath the rainfall shower. Of course, what rivals the architectural finery is the suite of conveniences at your disposal. Expect indulgent amenities such as 600 thread count Egyptian cotton linens, flat-screen TV’s, high-speed Wi-Fi, not to mention a 24-hour room service should you fancy an in-room tapas midnight feast.

How about the food and drinks at Hotel Maria Cristina

Within the regal confines of the Maria Cristina hotel, your palette will encounter culinary wonders beyond reckoning at the two distinctly renowned in-house dining options — Dry Martini by Javier de las Muelas and Café Saigon. Dry Martini, a cocktail bar inspired by Hollywood glamour, permits you the delightful chance to sip on delicious concoctions created by some of the city's best mixologists. These exotic elixirs, beautifully presented and coupled with vibrant pintxos - a traditional Basque snack, ensures an unforgettable experience.

A counterpoint to this is the Café Saigon, a gastronomical homage to the Oriental East. This spot boasts some of San Sebastian's most delectable Asian cuisine, sure to immerse your taste buds in a pan-Asian odyssey of flavor, showcasing dishes from Vietnam, China, Japan, and Thailand. From succulent pieces of sushi to comforting bowls of pho, the Café Saigon is a haven for food enthusiasts keen on a unique Eastern culinary experience amidst the heart of sunny San Sebastian.

What is the service like

Staff members are known for their genuine warmth, distinct professionalism, and unparalleled attention to detail. Concierge services are always on point, anticipating your every need even before you voice them out. Dealing with international clientele on a daily basis, they impressively converse in several languages, demonstrating not just proficiency but also a joyous zest for their job.

The housekeeping staff maintains a high standard of cleanliness, leaving rooms spotless and refreshing. Your requests are handled swiftly and competently, whether it's room service at midnight or arranging a cultural tour of San Sebastian.

What’s the neighbourhood scene like?

Just a short stroll away, you'll find the Old Town (Parte Vieja), a bustling neighborhood bursting with historical buildings, narrow, winding alleys, and a lively bar scene. One can spend hours exploring, tasting world-renowned tapas, visiting unique shops, and soaking in the Basque culture which is thick in the air here.

Right on the hotel's doorstep is the Urumea River, providing stunning views and romantic riverside walks. If you're in the mood for an artistic journey, the San Telmo Museum, with its collection of Basque art, is just a stone's throw away. For the film enthusiasts, the iconic Kursaal Congress Centre - the usual host of the San Sebastian Film Festival - is also within easy reach.

What’s the backstory of the Maria Cristina Hotel

Its eponymous name, Maria Cristina, is a tribute to the Spanish queen regent Maria Cristina who officially inaugurated the hotel on July 16, 1912. The project was envisioned by Charles Mewès, the architect behind the legendary Ritz hotels in Paris and Madrid. Over the course of time, the hotel has been an emblem of elegance and style, harboring renowned artists, celebrities, and royalty within its walls.

During the 1920s and 1930s, the hotel basked in a glamorous era, hosting decadent balls and legendary parties frequented by aristocrats and high society. However, the Spanish Civil War posed a period of turmoil, forcing the hotel to temporarily close its doors and serve as a hospital instead. Despite this, the hotel has always managed to recover and recreate its enchanting allure, maintaining its place as one of the most elite addresses in the city of San Sebastian.

Price Range

Standard rooms are likely to set you back somewhere between €300 to €400 per night, and if you're feeling particularly partial to sufficient opulence, you can expect to pay upwards of €600 for one of their elegantly adorned suites. Of course, prices may fluctuate depending on the season and availability, but rest assured that this experience comes with a price tag that corresponds with its grand stature.

Now, you may be thinking, "that's a hefty sum indeed!" and it certainly is, especially when compared to other establishments in the city. But remember, the Hotel Maria Cristina prides itself on offering a world-class service that goes above and beyond what you might typically encounter.

Amenities & Facilities

The hotel offers a variety of facilities such as an on-site business center with fast and efficient services, and free high-speed internet that ensures you're always connected. The Maria Cristina also offers valet parking service, so you won't have to worry about finding a spot for your vehicle in the bustling city.

With a 24-hour front desk, the outstanding staff are ready to assist you with anything you need, offering a personal touch that makes any stay at the Maria Cristina Hotel a truly memorable experience.

How to get to Hotel Maria Cristina in San Sebastian

If you've just landed at San Sebastian airport and Hotel Maria Cristina is your destination, there are several methods of transport available. One option is to take the public bus, Line E21, a service which operates from the airport every hour. This journey will take approximately 30 minutes, and you'll need to alight at the Avenida de Libertad stop, which is a brief 5-minute walk to the hotel.

If you are someone who prefers more comfort and speed, a taxi might be your preferred option. Taxis are conveniently available at the airport and can deliver you directly to the door of the hotel in about 20 minutes. Be prepared though, this added convenience does cost more than the bus service.
